BLOOD RED SANGRIA COCKTAIL

The small pour of red wine that sits at the bottom of this crystal clear concoction is inspired by classic Spanish sangria and gives off a bloody good visual. Pour this one when watching your favorite vampire flick.

Blood-Red Sangria Cocktail

This citrusy martini gets its striking layered appearance from drops of sangria-inspired simple syrup made from red wine and dark sweet cherries (after all, “sangria” means “bleeding” in Spanish!).

INGREDIENTS

Sangria Simple syrup

cup sugar
cup red wine, such as Merlot or Zinfandel
cup dark sweet cherries, stemmed, pitted and halved
stick cinnamon
Strips of orange peel from 1 medium orange (orange part only)

Sangria Martini Cocktail

Ice cubes
tablespoons (1 1/2 oz) citron (citrus) vodka
tablespoons (1 oz) clear orange-flavored liqueur
tablespoons (1 oz) sangria simple syrup, chilled (above)
dark sweet cherry on a cocktail pick

DIRECTIONS

·     To make simple syrup, in 1 1/2-quart saucepan, mix sangria simple syrup ingredients. Heat to boiling over medium heat. Simmer 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; let cool 30 minutes. Strain mixture through fine mesh strainer; discard solids. Cover and chill sangria syrup until ready to use. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
·    To make cocktail, fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka and orange liqueur to cocktail shaker; cover and shake. Strain into martini glass. Drizzle sangria syrup into cocktail in glass. Garnish with cherry.

THE WITCH'S HEART - HALLOWEEN COCKTAIL
Author: Dini from The Flavor Bender
Makes/ Serves: 1 drink

WHAT YOU NEED
·     1 oz apple flavoured vodka, chilled
·     1 tsp grenadine
·     Purple Viniq to top up, chilled
·     Powdered dry ice (optional)
·  Martini glass to serve
METHOD
1    Add about ½ - 1 tsp of powdered dry ice to the bottom of the glass (optional). Pour the flavoured vodka and Viniq to fill the martini glass (do not fill to the brim). Pour 1 tsp of grenadine syrup about one inch from the surface of the drink - the grenadine should sink to the bottom, creating a "bleeding" effect.
2    Add about ½ tsp of powdered dry ice on top and serve with a stirrer - so your guests can stir the "potion" to create that shimmery, smoky effect.
3Brain Hemorrhage: 1/2 Peach Schnapps. 1/2 Bailey’s. A few drops of Grenadine Syrup.

INGREDIENTS:
·Lemon Juice
·Simple Syrup (1 cup sugar dissolved in 1 cup water)
·Water
·Food Coloring (optional but makes it pretty)
·Ice or a spoon for slow pouring (the ice free strategy is much harder)
DIRECTIONS:
1First, fill your glasses with ice. Then, do the following steps for each layer. Finally, sip your mathematical masterpiece.
2Add the proportions of lemon juice and simple syrup indicated below to your liquid measuring cup.
3Add food coloring if desired.
4Fill measuring cup to the 4 oz. (1/2 cup) line.
5Stir to blend all ingredients in your measuring cup.
6Slowly pour a layer from your measuring cup into your drink glasses. You want to pour directly onto an ice cube, the ice cubes are there to slow down your liquid as it goes down the cup and to help keep the layers distinct. (You can pour the first layer normally)
THE LAYERS:
11 tsp. lemon juice
21 tsp. simple syrup
31 tsp. lemon juice, 1 tsp. simple syrup
41 tsp. lemon juice, 2 tsp. simple syrup
52 tsp. lemon juice, 3 tsp. simple syrup
63 tsp. lemon juice, 5 tsp. simple syrup
75 tsp. lemon juice, 8 tsp. simple syrup

This recipe is from Mel's Kitchen Cafe.  She says the layering effect works by using three different drinks with varying sugar contents.  The drink with the highest sugar content stays at the bottom and the drink with the least sugar stays at the top.  You must be very careful pouring each juice or the colors will mix together.  It still tastes good, but you'll have a purple drink instead of the cool layered effect.  Here's what you'll need to make these fun drinks.

Ingredients:
Cranberry Juice, chilled
Blue Gatorade (not sugar-free), chilled
Sprite Zero, chilled
Ice
Here's what I found out when making this drink:
It really works best when all the drinks are chilled.  I tried making it before I chilled everything and the colors mixed together really easily.  Make sure to chill the cranberry juice, Gatorade, and soda before you start.
Use a lot of ice for each drink.  You don't have to be careful pouring the cranberry juice, but you do have to be very careful pouring the blue Gatorade.  If you use a lot of ice, it makes it easier to pour without mixing.  Pour the Gatorade in slowly and carefully over the ice.  As the Gatorade trickles over the ice, it won't mix with the cranberry juice.
No matter how slowly or carefully I poured, I absolutely could not get the soda to lay on top.  Every time I poured it, it mixed everything together.  I couldn't find Sprite Zero at the store so I used diet Seirra Mist.  I figured it would be ok since they're both diet sodas with no sugar and should stay on top.
The science geeks at my house wondered if the red and blue layers stayed separate because of the electrolytes and salt content in the Gatorade.  They wondered if it was the salt instead of the sugar that kept the layers separate much like a halocline.  That might explain why the soda wouldn't stay on top.
What do you think?  If you've tried this drink and got the soda to work, let me know your secret!
